HAS SUN SIGN CHANGED ? NO DEAR ……

The mathematical calculations behind Western Astrology as defined by Ptolemy in the 2nd century is based on the Vernal Equinox, not the on-going wobble of the Earth. Ptolemy’s definitions are the mathematical calculations used for locating your sign in the daily newspaper. 

The current misunderstanding that is occurring focuses on the discrepancy between the traditional Sun Sign dates and the current physical location of the planets. If the Earth is perceived as separate from its solar system, then the wobble causes the perception that the constellations have shifted. 

Because of the rotation of the Earth and its natural wobble, physically the Earth changes its relationship to the constellations 1 degree every 70 years. And thus, over thousands of years the constellations physically appear to have shifted 24 degrees – but only as seen from the Earth as an entity isolated from its solar system. 

Nonetheless, over the centuries Astrology has taken into account both perceptions. There are TWO primary astrological systems used throughout the world. One system does not take into account the earth’s wobble when calculating the astrological signs, the other system does take into account the wobble of the earth.

WESTERN/TROPICAL ASTROLOGY:

Tropical Astrology is based on the calculations of Ptolemy in the 2nd Century. It does not take into account the wobble of the Earth. It defines the signs relative to the Vernal Equinox, which is the system used by the ancient Babylonians. It is the historical definition of classical astrology and is the system defining the dates of the Sun signs in the Western world. These calculations are based on the Earth relative to its solar system. 

Tropical Astrology is the classical mathematical system of astrology used in the Western world, including the US and Europe. It is called ‘Western Astrology’. 

VEDIC/SIDEREAL ASROLOGY:

Sidereal Astrology is the ancient mathematical system of astrology used in India and is called ‘Vedic Astrology”. 

Both systems work and are accurate operating within their own perimeters. The same phenomena occurs in medicine. Medicine in China focus on the flows, meridians, and 5 elements to bring about a healing; Western medicine focus on the organs, bacteria, and emphasizes physical evidence. Both systems of healing are effective, although the lens through which they see the human body is radically different. 

In the same way, both Tropical and Sidereal Astrology are accurate within the context of their own systems. Even the signs take on a somewhat different meaning in each system. For success, each approach must be used in the context of its own paradigm. 

Astrology has been looked to for guidance in understanding different personality types and predicting future events in civilizations throughout the world since the beginning of recorded history. From a rational point of view, something about it must be true or wouldn’t have been around so long. 

The 12 Rashis (signs)
The zodiac is divided in 12 sections, which are called the 12 rashis, or signs. Each sign is exactly 30 degrees. Like the bhavas(houses), the rashis are each related to an area of life. Part of the characteristics of a sign are derived from the graha(planet) that is lord of that sign, but independant of that, each rashis has its own unique traits. The rashis are classified in many different ways, as movable fixed and dual, as male or female, as watery, dry, airy or fiery, etc. The most influencial rashi is the one which was ascending at the Eastern horizon at the time of birth. It is called the "Lagna", or better known, Ascendant. Because of its prominence, the whole chart will be colored according to its characteristics. Another very important sign is the one that holds the Moon, the so-called Janma Rashi. The Moon is very important in Jyotish, and so is the Rashi it is in. Both the Ascendant and the Moon sign will be of major influence in the life of the individual.

Signs are called "Rashis" (raw-shees) in Sanskrit. This table shows the signs with their rulers, Sanskrit names and symbols, etc.

As you can see, the signs are the same as used in Western astrology. However, the nature of the signs, what they do, and the

demigods behind them, who control them, are vastly different in Vedic astrology.

Note:

Vedic astrology differs from Western or Tropical astrology mainly in that it uses the fixed zodiac as opposed to the moving zodiac. Most people's "Sun Sign", that which you can get from the newspaper each day, is usually one sign back when the chart is refigured using Vedic astrology. So, the first surprise using the Vedic system is that you are no longer the Sun Sign you always thought you were. However, if you were born in the last 5 days or so of the Western sign month, then you will probably still be the same sign in the Vedic system.

Aries
Raunchy Aries is one of the most passionate and impetuous of the signs. Feelings run high when ardent Aries is around.
